Chapter Five

OAKLEY WOKE with a crick in his neck. It took him a few seconds to recall where he was, and at first the memories of the previous night made him scowl, but then he registered the firm form behind him and the arm draped over him, and his grimace transformed into a grin.

He shuffled farther into Bobby’s arms, pressing his back to Bobby’s chest. Bobby murmured and tightened his grip, hugging Oakley to him and burying his head in the crook of Oakley’s neck. The embrace was so wonderful that, for a moment, Oakley never wanted to move again. What better way to spend the remainder of his days than in Bobby’s arms, far from his parents and their grief, far from the memory of his sister, and far from any responsibility or sense of duty? However, his imagination had its limits, and it wasn’t long before he had to acknowledge the cold seeping into his bones and the stiff ache in his limbs.

“Bobby,” he whispered, trying to turn within the hold without breaking it. “Bobby, it’s morning.”

Bobby mumbled something that sounded like, “Don’t let the pig loose,” and fisted Oakley’s T-shirt.

Oakley chuckled and reached for Bobby’s hand. He eased the fist open and brought the fingers to his lips. He kissed the tip of each and then sucked the middle finger into his mouth. That got a reaction.

Bobby jolted awake, eyes wide and body tense. For an instant, he appeared a deer caught in the headlights, but then his gaze settled on Oakley and he relaxed, a faint and very attractive blush spreading across his cheeks.

“Hey.”

“Hey.” Oakley grinned. “Time to get up.”

“Oh.” Bobby lowered his eyes and immediately withdrew. “I guess you want to go back now?”

“I didn’t say that.” He caught Bobby’s arm and coaxed him back toward him. “I just thought we should move before we either freeze to death or do our backs in.” He kissed Bobby’s forehead. “I’m still spending the day with you. I did promise, and I never break my word.”

Bobby managed a smile that seemed at once both shy and laced with humor. “You mean you’d get out of it if you could?”

Oakley pretended to study his nails. “Naturally. Lucky for you I’m so gallant.”

“You won’t be wanting any more kisses, then.”

Bobby started to move away, but Oakley pounced. He tugged Bobby back down, straddled him, and plundered his mouth. Bobby made a lackluster show of resisting for all of two seconds, then returned the embrace. They stayed that way for a short while, until Oakley’s back protested with a loud crack, forcing him upright.

“Damn. In films, spending the night in the hay always looks so romantic. They don’t tell you how it pulls your spine out of alignment.”

“I did warn you we’d be roughing it.”

“Yeah. But I never really believed you.” Oakley winked to show he didn’t mean it as a complaint. Then he paced, trying to stretch his grumbling muscles. As he walked, he looked around the barn. “Where
